*A good explanation of what a Death doula is
* "A death doula is someone who undergoes training to assist the dying and their family members. While the word “doula” comes from a Greek word which means “woman who serves,” a death doula can be of any gender, and the background of a death doula can be incredibly diverse. In regions where death doulas are available for the dying, they generally work through hospice and in-home care programs.
Caring for someone who is dying can be traumatic and confusing for family members, especially in a culture where caring for the dead is not ingrained in society. A death doula can guide family members through the process of death, telling them what to expect and acting as an advocate for them and for the decedent with representatives of the hospital, funeral homes, and other personnel who may be involved in the death process.
For the dying, a death doula offers comfort, support, and companionship. Many death doulas work in groups, so that someone will always be available to sit at the deathbed, and doulas may sit quietly with the dying, sing to them, talk with them, or offer other acts of companionship. Death doulas with nursing training may also offer some end of life care, ranging from providing medication to bathing the dying.
Many people associate the term “doula” with a midwife, thanks to the growing doula movement which provides support and advocacy for expecting mothers. Death doulas regard their work as equally important, as life and death are two sides of the same coin, and some even call themselves “death midwives” to stress the connection between birth and death. Like doulas who help expecting mothers, death doulas may provide a range of services, tailoring their offerings to the needs of their clients".
As The Winter Solstice approaches ,and having hit Hermit Mode a few weeks ago. I've been in a reflective mood since .
Winter has always been pretty much a fav season of mine . I love how everything seem's to slow down and go "beneath" ready to come and shine in a few months after being still and replenished.
I love the "Grey days" where it is nondescript and you could gaze out and wonder at winter wonderland. The fading sun and gentle or torrential rain. The mists, fog, crisp air and the cold!
Yep LOVED it. It almost seems past tense.
Something's changed however? I miss the sun, I miss the blue sky's & I miss the warmth!
WTF? is going on! I look out now and feel a bit gloomy, where as once I would come alive with the winter energy. I'm cold and feeling it ? Which is quite bizarre to me. People used to think I was mad for loving winter( especially my husband) who craves the warmth.
There is a disorder called SAD ~ Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
( Google it) that can affect people in winter or summer.
I'm still unsure what this shift may mean, but I'm going with it anyhow. Me a sun person? Ohh the horror of it all ! As I'm typing this : the sun has peaked his head around the clouds and I'm smiling. Maybe I'm developing a "sunny disposition" !!! Bah Ha! Yeah, that might help :)
Yesterday I walked the land, Up hills and down dales and Valleys I went. I felt like a kid again finding magical places where the ancients walked many moons ago. I walked along the river beds , saw quartz glinting in the sunlight..soft pebbles glistening with trickles of seasonal water flowing down the hill.
Found groves of Ghost Gums , standing like Sentinel's over the valley, These silent giants connected the earth and sky, as Black Cockatoo's had rest upon their limbs. The solar King circled above, watching it all from a distance. Riding the thermal winds on a picture perfect day. I followed the Kangaroo tracks that led me through the overgrown bush safely. To bodies of water that were home to the Frogs and Dragonflies.
I found Bleached Bones of animals past. Still a part of the land, with moss and lichen covering, slowly returning them to the Mother.
As I walked through this natural wonderland, I asked those that had gone before me to guide me.
I felt the ancestors from the beginning hear me.
I gave thanks for being able to be on this ancient land and gave a oath as a caretaker.
The land offered me many things yesterday, It welcomed me like a long lost daughter returning home.
My promise is to honour, love & protect her and all her creatures.
What a blessed day, with many more to come
Hmm ,Nothing like the smell of Incense burning through the house. Its really weird because all my life I have burnt incense throughout the whole house, candles and oils. Then suddenly I stopped ? why ? It was very ritualistic, cathartic and something I have always done.
I am reflecting back to why/when I stopped. I think it was when I opened up the healing room. Shitz still goes off in there ! Why would I not want to create sacred space in my whole house? Which it essentially is.
I had forgotten the art of ritual and blessings belongs EVERYWHERE not just to one room.
The house is smiling at me..almost whispering ahh where ya been ? Welcome back :)
With Intent and a smile as I light a candle in every room, put the oil burners on, spark up the incense and play some wicked tunes.
Remembering when this was a part of my day, always!
Two of my children have moved out, We had a convo a while back and I asked them what they miss the most about not living at home . Here's what they said :
"Waking up to The smell of incense and Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin playing in the background on a Saturday morning"
Yeah Baby ~ That what I'm talking about :)
Well the energy has certainly been "heavy" in the lead up to the new moon.Very still and quite. If you fought it and kept going ( as you do) it may still be in play now. I gave myself permission in the dark of the moon..to do absolutely nothing. I stayed in and sat quietly, it was a PJ day. It was a
don't think" day.
We normally fight these kind of days. I think its because we are so used to being "on " all the time. Letting go and switching off is one of the hardest and uncomfortable things to do. Why do we feel we need to fill in the gaps, so to speak ?
It's ok to just be ~ new Mantra :)
If you feel it , try and honour it. I know its hard with work/family/friends and the 21st century lifestyle.
But in giving yourself a break, without the guilt associated to be" doing" all the time. You just might find a knowing or gain a little insight as to where you're at.
Since the new moon I have been bouncing off the walls. All weekend I cooked (the stores are full, for now) and cleaned ( well that shit never ends) .
I think that had something to do with the coming of winter as well. It was our first day of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere yesterday. Preparing the nest, for short days and the weakening sunlight. Making ready the cave.
Today I just wanna "be" again. So off to do "nothing" and feel bloody Fabulous about it!
